About East Washington Branch Library
Dedicated November 14, 1911, the East Washington Library is the oldest building in constant use as a library in Marion County. It was the first of five branches constructed with a $120,000 construction grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation in 1909. In recognition, the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indianapolis presented the Library in 2002 with an Historic Preservation Award for Continued Use.
The architectural highlight of the building is two book gnome sculptures that perch above the front entry. Additional features include the original oak woodwork, circulation desk and two fireplaces. In 1978, a complete renovation and remodeling of the branch was undertaken. The project took almost a year and cost $200,000. During 2003-04, the 6,800 square-foot branch was recarpeted and the metal front doors were replaced by custom oak doors modeled from those original to the building.
