The construction team responsible for the renovation and transformation of Central Library downtown is in place following action by the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Board of Trustees.

At its regular meeting Thursday, December 21, Trustees voted to enter into contract negotiations with the Library Delivery Team, a joint venture among Indianapolis firms Trotter Construction Co., Inc., Turner Construction Company, and Shiel Sexton Company, to serve as Construction Manager for the $104 million project. The individual selected as Project Manager is Thomas F. Woeste of Turner Construction Company. The construction management partnership has successfully managed major library projects in other cities, including Cleveland, Los Angeles and Columbus, Ohio.

The Library Delivery Team was selected following an intensive search and interview process conducted by specially formed committees consisting of Library Board members, administrative staff and outside expertise.

As Construction Manager, the Library Delivery Team will serve as the Library's on-site representative responsible for the hiring and performance of sub-contractors and the day-to-day management of the project.

This latest action finalizes the assembly of key administrative personnel who will oversee the Central Library transformation, scheduled for completion in January, 2006. In October, IMCPL Trustees entered into contract negotiations with the Indianapolis construction management firm of Scott Hilliard Kosene to serve as Owner's Representative for the project's duration. The firm will represent the Library in dealing with design and construction issues and assist in the preparation of construction designs.

The project's architect is Woollen Molzan and Partners, Inc.

Bids for the initial phase of construction will be received in June, 2002. A public groundbreaking event is scheduled in late summer or early fall of 2002. Construction will begin by the end of 2002.

During construction, Central Library, located at 40 E. St. Clair Street, will be closed. However, interim downtown library services will continue at the Old City Hall (currently the Indiana State Museum), 202 N. Alabama Street.

When completed, the transformed Central Library will feature a six-story addition to the north of the existing historic structure, a circular auditorium, and underground parking for 420 vehicles. Among the major offerings will be the Family Information Center, which will host exciting new programming and introduce young people to a vast array of electronic resources.
