ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Downloadable Audio Books Enhance IMCPL's Collection
Library patrons can now listen to the latest bestsellers on their personal computers or other supported listening devices through a new digital service provided by the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library.
In response to increased demand for audio books, over 550 popular audio books are available to download from the Library's website. These range from the popular novels of Dean Koontz and Nora Roberts to the classic works of Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. A wide variety of non-fiction are also included in this collection.
Those with a valid IMCPL library card and Internet access can "check out" audio books at no cost. Just like other checked out materials from the Library, the audio books have a three-week loan period.
When the lending period ends, the file is automatically "returned," so there are never late fees.
Audio books play on personal computers, laptops or portable devices, such as WMA/MP3 players. The audio book files are not compatible with iPods or Macs, and cannot be downloaded to a library computer or personal computer at an IMCPL location.
By clicking on "Download Audiobooks" in the navigation section of the Library's homepage, patrons are taken to the main audio books page that displays book titles, help guides and other useful information. Free software is available on the site which must be installed in order to use the service. Patrons can then browse and select from the vast collection of titles. Downloaded files can then be transferred to a portable devise or burned directly onto a CD.
IMCPL's latest format offering comes from the digital audio books collection of OverDrive Audiobooks and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from any remote location.
