ABOUT THE LIBRARY
IMCPL Announces Its 2006 Summer Reading Program, "Lost in a Book!"
Children of all ages and families are invited to become part of a treasure island escape into reading during the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library?s 2006 Summer Reading Program, "Lost in a Book," beginning Monday, June 5 and continuing through Saturday, July 29.
This year?s summer reading theme will inspire countless adventures through books and provide motivation for children to continue reading during the summer. The program helps prepare younger children for reading success in school and helps older children become lifelong readers.
Participants may register at any IMCPL branch library, the Interim Central Library or the Bookmobile to receive an official point card. They?ll earn points for each book that is read. Points are awarded based on the difficulty of a book. Accumulated points can be exchanged for a variety of prizes, including "ginormous grow lizards," tie-dye swim goggles, paperback books, White Castle Award Meals, and Indy Parks pool passes.
Parents play a critical role by participating along with their children. By serving as mentors and reading aloud to their younger children, including babies, toddlers and preschoolers, parents give a preview of the enjoyment to be found in books.
With over 57,000 participants in 2005, representing nearly 1 of 4 children in Marion County, IMCPL?s Summer Reading Program is one of the most successful in the nation.
The program will culminate with a celebration of reading achievement on Monday, August 1 during Indianapolis Indians Library Night at Victory Field.
Major sponsors include Lilly Endowment Inc.; The Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation, a CICF affiliate; Carrier Corporation; The Patricia Cornwell Foundation; Pacers Foundation, Inc.; ProLiance Energy LLC; Today?s Bedroom One; and WIBC.
