As part of Indiana's Bicentennial Legacy Project, local authors Hugh Vandivier, Clint Smith, Maggie Wheeler and Austin Wilson will share tales of adventures set in downtown Indianapolis. The authors were contributors to "Mythic Indy," an anthology of weird stories and legends set in various Indianapolis locations that benefits the programs of Second Story.

The Hauntings of Indianapolis: Life & Death of Dr. Helene Elise Hermine Knabe

Listen to the stories told of Dr. Helene Elise Hermine Knabe, a progressive woman in the early 1900s who was a doctor, researcher, educator, suffragette and friend. Immigrating from Germany to Indiana to become a doctor, she challenged feminine stereotypes by becoming a doctor and the first woman to be employed in the lab by the Indiana State Board of Heath. Her life came to an end when she was brutally murdered in 1911, and her killer was never prosecuted. This program is presented by Unseenpress.com.

The Irvington Branch will host a number of activities as part of the annual Irvington Halloween Festival. Children and families can enjoy Abracadabra Magic with Magic Mike at 10:30 a.m., Animalia (live animals) at 12 noon, Silly Safaris (live animals) at 1:30 p.m., and Indiana Jim's Reptile Experience at 3 p.m. The festival will feature a street fair, booths, music stages, a run, food trucks and a beer garden throughout the Irvington district between Ritter and Arlington Avenues.
Note: Library parking is not available during the day of the Festival.

So Kawaii! Introductory Art Class

Children ages 7 and up are invited to transform any drawing from normal to kawaii! Participants will bring in a drawing of any object or creature (a piece of toast, an elephant, a refrigerator) and turn it into a highly stylized cartoon in kawaii style. The session will include a discussion of what kawaii means and what illustration techniques are key to maintaining the kawaii animation style. This program is presented by Art With a Heart.

Harpist Melissa Gallant will perform from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Indiana Poet Laureate Shari Wagner will present a program, "The Place Poem: A Workshop & Reading," from 2 - 4 p.m. She will read from her poems and lead attendees in writing a short poem abut their library memories.
