Cologne, Germany: A Sister City German Culture Exhibition

Individuals of all ages are invited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the City's Sister City relationship with Cologne, Germany by viewing a dynamic exhibit that explores Cologne and the German-American experience. It features Cologne architecture, sports and culture; German traditions, toys and art; the German immigrant story; German-American contributions to the development of Indianapolis; the Vonnegut family's connections to Indianapolis; and the works of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Be sure to view a portrait of Clemens Vonnegut, Sr. painted by T.C. Steele in the 1890's. Clemens Vonnegut, Sr. immigrated to the U.S. from Germany after the failed 1848 revolution to become a respected member of the German-American community in Indianapolis. He was a founding member of several local organizations and started the Vonnegut Hardware Store. This activity is sponsored by BMO Harris Bank, The Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund, and The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, in partnership with the Office of International & Cultural Affairs in the Office of Mayor Greg Ballard and the Indianapolis-Cologne Sister Cities Committee.
